The Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy was established on Sept 1 1970. Patient care is based on three major fields: anaesthesiology, intensive therapy and pain relief.
Our anaesthesiological work involves procedures of general and local anaesthesia and each year we contribute to the recovery of 25 000 patients having undergone surgery. Pre-operative examinations and preparations carried out at our special out-patient department are of utmost importance.
High quality care is provided by are physicians and nurses at three intensive care units (2 general and 1 at the Dept. of Neurosurgery) involving 29 beds, that means each year ca. 2500 patients of critical condition.
Our Pain Relief Centre has provided care for patients with unbearable pain for decades. We apply up-to-date methods: regional anaesthesiological techniques, combined medications and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation.
Beside the clinical work extensive research is performed in our wards and operating theatres. Also, we participate in teaching medical students, postgraduate education, preparing our colleagues for the specializing exam and in the further training of our specialists and trained auxiliary workers.
