Besides their responsible studies many university students include the pursuit of sports in their lives as well. The specialists of the Medical School’s Sports Facilities and the sections of UP MS - Petőfi SE provide the professional background; the financial stability of the preparation comes from the support of the School’s leadership, and from the corporate tax support income of the UP MS - Petőfi SE that can be spent on sport.
One of the most important links in the chain of the cooperation are the UP MS Hungarian Student Union and the UP Faculty of Pharmacy Hungarian Student Union, whose members have done everything to mobilize the sportsmen and the fans, and to organize various motivational programs this year as well. Such an event took place before the departure on 21 March; it was a sports event including teams of sportsmen and fans, lasting all night long in the Jakabhegyi street gym hall. A significant amount of the fans’ expenses was covered by the UP MS Hungarian Student Union and the UP Faculty of Pharmacy Hungarian Student Union. The call for competition enables the students of the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Pharmacy to take part in the cup as well. Seizing this opportunity, these students were included in the teams too.
After the knowingly organized and executed preparation the students travelled to the Semmelweis University in Budapest for the 46th Medical Cup, which took place between 23 and 25 March. The Pécs delegation of 114 members consisted of 83 general medicine students, 14 students of health sciences, 3 pharmacy students and 14 sports specialist (delegation leader, coach, physical education teacher, administrative staff).
In the course of the competition balanced power relations evolved in the different sports, especially between Pécs and Debrecen. High quality, exciting matches took place. Every Pécs team finished in the top 3. The five-a-side football players and women and men volleyball players performed best, they won all their matches, and therefore they could stand on top of the podium in their sports. It is characteristic of the balanced power relations that the men volleyball players countered the opponent’s two match balls in the final match, in the final set, and after that they scored the victorious hit. The women’s handball, the men’s handball, the women’s basketball, and the water polo teams finished second, our men’s basketball players achieved third place. With all these successes they have won the overall Medical Cup victory, for the third time in a row.
They could not have achieved this without the 400-person Pécs fan troop, and the UP Brass Band who inspired the teams on a high volume in all locations. Among the fans of the four universities they were the most organised, the most creative and the best. The cheerleader team helped the sportsmen through the deadlock many times and helped in fighting for the victories. The cheerleader team put on a great show at the announcement of results, and the fans created an unrepeatable spirit as well.
After the announcement of the victory, the sportsmen and the fans formed a real community, they celebrated the fantastic result together. The “Pécs is here”, the “Everybody wants to be from Pécs”, and the “We won the Medical Cup” chants were sang with musical cortege.
