Dear Students,

Prosthetic Dentistry has always been one of the major components of a dental school curriculum. In many countries, however, it has been divided into different subdisciplines, or has had other related fields attached to it.  This is why the academic field of prosthetic dentistry can be defined differently around the word.

Practitioners have always devoted much time to prosthetic treatment after loss of tooth substances.  Many areas of prosthetic dentistry, such as occlusion, esthetic dentistry and implantology, have been the focus of clinical courses, textbooks and advanced training to such an extent that they have virtually become separate disciplines. Clinical prosthetics is often very technically demanding and much time and effort is devoted to this aspect of treatment. The technical effort can be so great that many would say that prosthetic dentistry is only a technical discipline with a scientific background relating to clinical method alone. However, the many fundamental aspects found in the prosthetic literature suggest that this assertation is incorrect.  To further challenge this misconception our clinical staff decided to launch courses with a new goal, namely principles and management strategies of prosthetic dentistry.

In industrial countries there is an increased success rate in the treatment of dental caries and periodontal diseases, especially, in the younger generations. This is leading to an increased awareness among the middle-aged and elderly populations, who will increasingly reject defective dentitions and prosthetic restoration from functional, aesthetic, biological and psychological points of view.

Faced with these misconception and challenges we believe that there is a definite need for a web site that deals with basic issues of prosthetic dentistry such as epidemiology, treatment need, overall diagnosis, cultural influences, adverse material reaction and prognosis.

We hope that this edition will increase your ambition to get involved into details of prosthodontics and to discuss obscure parts of delivered topics and the same time, it help you to work with success in the clinical practice.
