The APAktiviti Light board game published by the Akut Pécs Foundation in December focuses on everyday health emergencies. It is aimed at both those who are interested in healthcare, medicine and emergency care, and those who would like to gain knowledge useable in real life situations in a gamified manner.
The game was born from the cooperation of the UP Clinical Centre, Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Akut Pécs Foundation, which has been operating since 2020 and aims to improve the care of patients in need of acute care in Pécs and the surrounding area and to increase patient satisfaction. The goal of the game is to teach basic first aid techniques and their theoretical and practical backgrounds in a gamified manner.
The board has ten sections, and the players answer first aid related questions after drawing cards. Every section has its own topic, for example basic resuscitation (BLS), school, transport, home, street, emergency. There are also questions related to social issues in the game.
Easier than its predecessor, focusing on everyday situations
The APAkiviti Light is not without prelude: The APAktiviti board game was published by Akut Pécs Foundation in Summer 2022, supporting the theoretical and practical applications of basic emergency care processes in a gamified manner, albeit at a higher level.
“Last year’s game is mostly for those who work in healthcare, and those who are studying it. APAktiviti Light, published at the end of 2023 and first showcased on the open day of the Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy is a bit easier, as the name suggests. It is aimed and those who are interested in medicine and health sciences, and those amateur first aid providers for whom the game can provide useful and life saving knowledge” – said András Sándor Deák, deputy director of nursing at the University of Pécs Clinical Centre, Department of Emergency Medicine, who also came up with the idea of the game.
He explained that the new game focuses on everyday situations, specifically showing cases that could happen on the street, at home or in the household, showing when a GP needs to be contacted and when – and how – an ambulance must be called, and when emergency care is needed.
“During development of the game, we paid attention to types of problems that specifically concern young people: drug use, nicotine pillow use, sexually transmitted diseases. We can also see questions in these topics in the situations presented by the game” – added András Deák.
“My colleagues and I were aiming to draw attention to the anomalies in the everyday life of emergency care as well. People’s understanding of health is not too good, therefore our questions include when to go to the emergency department and when to contact our GP. Since we got a lot of help from the Dean’s Office of the Medical School, it is understandable that there are questions related to the Medical School as well. We hope that the target audience of the game will find our work interesting and useful” – said dr. Péter László Kanizsai, head of department at the Clinical Centre, Department of Emergency Medicine, professional lector of APAktiviti Light.
The game was printed in almost 1000 copies, and many of them will be sent to high schools in the country. An English version is also in development.
APAktiviti Light can be purchased from Akut Pécs Foundation, ordering is possible on the akut.pecs.alapitvany@gmail.com email address. Proceeds will go to the continued support of the Akut Pécs Foundation.
