A major improvement in the removal of tumours and other masses located in the spinal cord and brain stem
The Dept. of Neurosurgery, Clinical Centre of the University of Pécs is the only clinic in the Transdanubian region where special surgeries can be performed due to a recent, advanced surgical technique to remove cancerous and other masses arising from the brain stem or adjacent tissues.
Recently, means of intraoperative neuro-monitoring have been applied when a tumour affecting the cervical spinal cord has been removed. Intraoperative neuro- monitoring enables the surgeons to control the spinal marrow function and its intactness during the operation. This procedure was first applied at the Dept. of Neurosurgery at the University of Debrecen and since then routinely implemented. From this year on the same technique is available at the University of Pécs enabling the neurosurgeons to remove tumours and other malformations arising in the brain stem or adjacent tissues and to follow up these interventions during complex electrophysiological monitoring, therefore minimizing intraoperative neurological damage and increasing the efficacy of extended surgeries.
Before the introduction of this novel technique electrophysiological monitoring and surgeries performed in local anaesthesia had been in use, however the implementation of the up-to-date Inomed system enables the complex monitoring of the spinal cord, encephalic nerves and the tissues beneath the cerebral cortex and allows on-line consultation during operations with the neurosurgeon colleagues of the University of Debrecen.
