The new Dental Education Center has been handed over

3 March 2022

The handover ceremony of the new Dental Education Center of the University of Pécs took place on 3 March. The five-story building with a useful floor area of 2,750 square meters was built on Tüzér street 1, opposite the building of the Medical School, within the framework of the Széchenyi 2020 program, and cost nearly HUF 2.7 billion.

The independent dental training in Pécs opened its doors in 1975 in a building on Dischka Győző street, well known to the region’s residents. The conditions for modern practical dental training could no longer be met in a building built as a school at the beginning of the last century and converted for clinical use in the 1970s. The facility, meant for the education of 100-120 people, has now quadrupled the number of students. The training portfolio has expanded significantly in both the undergraduate and postgraduate segments, and the future dentists can study in German and English programs since the early 2000s.

In 2017, the leadership of the University of Pécs decided to build a new building on Tüzér street, partly to make the planned facility more accessible to the residents of Pécs and partly to bring the locations of practical and theoretical medical training as close as possible. About 46,000 patients will be treated, and more than six hundred students will be educated in the new building annually. The new facility, which will be fully operational from the summer of 2022, will not only be easily accessible on foot, by public transport, and by bicycle, but a public car park will also help the building’s car traffic.

The nearly 3,000-square-metre, five-story building accommodates the full spectrum of dental care and practical training. More than 60 state-of-the-art dental treatment units provide the backbone of dental training, which encircle the central aisle and waiting room in a panoramic layout. The top floor of the building is occupied by spaces for students, research, teaching, and administration, and there is also a panoramic terrace facilitating community life.

Dr. Ákos Károly Nagy, head of the Clinical Center Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, said about the new center: “Patient care that was carried out in 42 dental treatment units before has been expanded to 61 modern units in the new building, and the technical building system capacity can ensure the operation of up to 70 units. Thanks to the investment, the quality of the training of dentistry students and dentists, as well as the lifelong training of the latter, will significantly increase by modernizing the educational environment of the highly practice-oriented dentistry training and by creating an infrastructural environment supporting students’ learning process.”
