The delay in the acquisition of equipment does not hinder the September start of the academic year for the new Dental Education Centre

24 May 2022

As we have reported on already, the University of Pécs new Dental Education Centre was handed over on March 3. The 2750 square metres, five-story building resides opposite of the Medical School, under Tüzér street 1. It was constructed as part of the Széchenyi 2020 program and cost almost 2.7 billion forints.

Dr. Ákos Károly Nagy, head of the Clinical Centre Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has said in a previous interview, that after the acquisition of the necessary equipment, they will manage the move from Dischka Győző street in three steps. In their original plans – after agreeing with the supplier – they were expecting to receive the equipment by May 15, but the war and shortage of materials got in the way, and now a delay of eight-nine weeks is expected. According to the director, this will not stop them from starting the new academic year in the new building, after an incredibly quick move; they also wish to start treating patients in the new building.

“A few days prior to the deadline of completion, the supplier envisioned a delay of wight-nine weeks after the vis major situation. Therefore, the arrival of the 22 missing treatment devices is delayed. We are hoping to manage the move in one month instead of the planned three, and then we can start the academic year in the new place. Apparently there is an expected delay in the completion of the MediSkillsLab on Szigeti street – which is the location of the practices of our students –, therefore we will host our ecucation lab in the old building of the Medical School, and education will happen in two buildings” – listed the newest developments the director of the Clinical Centre Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

According to dr. Ákos Károly Nagy, the sterilisation room, the suction motors and compressors are slowly reaching working status, so according to their old plan, the new building could have been completely up to standard by the third week of May. With the university procuring, the office furniture is now in place, and the acquisition of the necessary phones and computers is in constant progress. The move is made easier by the fact that there are less patients in the summer compared to other times of the year, but the summer practices of first, third and fourth year students will have to be conducted with a lower capacity.

He explained that the wall surfaces of the new building – according to an agreement with the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts – will be decorated by the works of the art students, and the roof and surroundings of the building will be populated by plants donated by the Botanical Garden. There are discussions with the dean of the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, dr. Péter Lengyel, about having temporary and permanent exhibitions on the corridors of the building.

The head of the clinic emphasized: acute patient care will be provided despite the move starting in July, the same way it was ensured during the coronavirus pandemic. The public will be constantly informed during the transition, and patients will be asked to enquire a few days before their treatment about where and when exactly they will be treated.
