Success of the 1st Demonstrator workshop of the Department of Anatomy

The 1st Anatomy Demonstrator Workshop was organized on the 13th of November, 2023. The main organizers were dr. Jason Sparks assistant professor, dr Andrea Tamas, associate professor, director of the Circle of Demonstrators, and Liliana Lucas, demonstrator student. The number of participants was 54 students and 18 faculty members from the Department of Anatomy. The language of the program was English, as many demonstrators from the English and German programs also participated.

After the Introduction of dr. Jason Sparks, dr. Andrea Tamas gave a short presentation on the DDK activity. Next, carrier lectures were held by two senior and two junior professors. Professor Attila Schwarcz, director of the Neurosurgery Clinic, talked about his experiences as a demonstrator student, and how much it meant in his future surgical profession and teaching activity. Professor Dora Reglodi, director of the Anatomy Department also talked about her early years as a medical student, demonstrator and young professor, and motivated students to be involved in the demonstrator activity. The two junior lecturers were dr. Zsombor Marton, assistant professor, who received his medical diploma this year, but has been involved in teaching for many years, leading his own group for the last 2 years; and Inez Bosnyak, 6th year medical student, who also has her own teaching group this year.

A certificate was given for outstanding achievements to Medard Varga and Woojae Jung, 3rd year medical students, who won 2nd prize at the first International Anatomy Competition, under the mentorship of dr. Zoltan Rekasi, associate professor; and to Inez Bosnyak and Mate Szemes, 6th year medical students, for their outstanding demonstrator activity. Alireza Hemmatian demonstrator student received a motivational certificate.

The practical part of the workshop took place in the Department of Anatomy, with the participants divided into 4 groups. Dr. Bence Pytel, dr. Balazs Horvath, dr. Daniel Pham and dr. Zsombor Marton led the practical parts of the workshop showing dissection skills, preparation techniques and showed students thow to use the teacher’s microscope. Another activity was led by Mate Szemes, 6th year medical student, who showed the 3D anatomy program, and motivated students to use it as a demonstration tool in class.

At the end of the workshop, a brainstorming was held also in 4 groups, where demonstrators discussed how they can best help students in their anatomy and histology studies, what advice they can give them for the exams. According to the feedback given at the end of the session, demonstrator students liked the workshop very much and therefore, we are planning to repeat it next year as well, to help students to develop their demonstration skills. Liliana Lucas, 4th year medical student, gave a presentation about the workshop at the General Assembly of the Circle of Demonstrators.
