This spring, the Department of Anatomy at the Medical School of the University of Pécs organized its first-ever Neuroanatomy Competition for Hungarian- and English-program students preparing for their final exam. Many participants achieved outstanding results throughout the competition, demonstrating an excellent level of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The competition consisted of three rounds. The first two rounds were written tests conducted in the same format and time schedule as the former midterm tests. A total of 166 medical students and 46 dental students registered for the first round, from which 73 medical and 21 dental students advanced to the second round.
The first test covered the gross anatomy and embryology of the brain and spinal cord, together with the material presented during the first five weeks of lectures and histology practicals. The second test focused on neuroanatomical theory, the anatomy of the head and neck, and the topics taught during the second five weeks of lectures and histology practicals. Only 20 medical and 5 dental students successfully qualified for the final round.
The third and final round took place in the dissection rooms and simulated the final exam, covering the complete curriculum from all three semesters. In three dissection rooms, participants were required to identify 10 labelled anatomical structures on cadavers and anatomical specimens at each station and answer the corresponding theoretical questions. The stations included 10 regional anatomy, 10 visceral anatomy, and 10 neuroanatomy or sensory organ structures. In the final station, students identified two histological slides under the microscope and answered the relating theoretical and embryological questions. All competitors received the same slides and the same set of questions.
The results were announced during the final neuroanatomy lecture of the semester. In addition to receiving a certificate and a personalized engraved "GOLDEN NEURON" award, the first-place winners were granted full exemption from the final examination, while students placing second through fifth were exempted from the neuroanatomy component of the exam.

Nearly all students who reached the final round but did not qualify for an exam exemption nevertheless achieved excellent results in their final examination during the first week of the exam period. The competition encouraged them to study consistently throughout the semester, making their final preparation considerably easier.
The staff of the Department of Anatomy believe that the competition successfully motivated students to engage in continuous learning and helped them develop a stronger foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Encouraged by its success, they plan to organize the Neuroanatomy Competition again next year.
