Three rural higher education institutions collaborate for the more effective treatment of high-mortality diseases and reduction of mortality

In connection with the treatment of acute pancreatitis, stroke, and heart attack and sudden cardiac death, three rural higher education institutions will collaborate in the frame of a nearly 1.5 billion HUF EU-funded project - the University of Pécs told MTI.

In 2017, UP and its consortium partners, the University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged received a 1.494 billion HUF non-refundable grant from the Economic development and innovation operational program (GINOP). In the frame of the project that runs until next January, basic researchers and clinicians will harmonise their research in three main disciplines: acute pancreatitis, stroke, and heart attack and sudden cardiac death to more effectively treat high-mortality diseases and reduce mortality.

According to the announcement, serious, acute, life-threatening diseases come with an unacceptably high mortality rate of 30 to 50 percent even in addition to current medical interventions. Reducing this can be improved by introducing the so-called translational medicine. The aim is to make the results of basic research and clinical research useful in patient care as soon as possible.

An important part of clinical research is the collection of patient data - these are already available in connection with four thousand patients regarding acute stroke, acute pancreatitis, and heart attack and sudden cardiac death - while three clinical trials have been launched in addition to already operating patient registries in the subject of acute pancreatitis.

The project, which will be completed in about half a year, is said to contribute to the application of scientific results in clinical practice, to the shortening of patients' hospital stays, to the improvement of mortality rates and ultimately to reducing healthcare costs.
