Artificial intelligence helps the Transdanubian stroke network

“Nearly 40,000 people in Hungary have strokes every year and 13,000 people die due to a cerebrovascular accident. 80-85 percent of the cases are caused by a blood clot blocking a vessel, in the treatment of which the early start of therapy is of key importance,” says dr. László Szapáry, president of the Hungarian Stroke Society, associate professor at the University of Pécs Clinical Center Department of Neurology.

“Stroke treatment has undergone significant development in recent years and the selection of the best treatment method today relies crucially on modern diagnostic imaging, the results of CT and MR scans. Nowadays, in addition to dissolving the blood clot, it is possible to remove it mechanically, which is done in neurointervention centres, in Southern Transdanubia the centre is at the UP Clinical Center Department of Neurosurgery on Rét Street” - Professor András Büki, the head of the department informed us.

If a patient is admitted to a nearby hospital with symptoms of stroke, a CT scan and the evaluation of the scan should be performed as soon as possible in all cases. Nowadays, fast evaluation is supported by a computer program as well. The program uses artificial intelligence to identify the damaged area of ​​the brain and it also finds the location of the blockage and can detect the resulting blood flow disorder.

"In the cooperation of the professionals working at the University of Pécs Department of Medical Imaging and the Pécs Diagnostic Center, a unique telemedicine solution was created," said dr. Tamás Dóczi, academic and executive director of the Pécs Diagnostic Center and he also added that this system allows the use of the above computer evaluation system in the hospitals of the region. The essence of this is a computer network that is able to forward CT images taken in the region via the Internet, so that digital images of CT scans taken at any time of the day can be sent to the central computer at the Pécs Diagnostic Center, which performs immediate evaluation. ”

“The referrer and the neurointervention specialist can view the result at the same time in a few minutes, and it is also possible to view the result on any mobile device with the help of a smartphone application,” says Professor Péter Bogner, head of the Clinical Center Department of Medical Imaging.

“The telemedicine solution will help decide what kind of therapy to use and, if necessary, patients can be transferred immediately to neurosurgery for the quick, mechanical removal of the blood clot. The hospitals in Szombathely, Zalaegerszeg, Nagykanizsa, Szekszárd and Baja participate in the stroke network but the system can be extended to the entire Transdanubia region,” - dr. Andor Sebestyén, president of the Clinical Center summarized the options.
