UP helps victims of the Croatian earthquake – help if you can too!

The University of Pécs contacted its partner university, the University of Zagreb, the buildings of which in Zagreb, but especially the Faculty of Teacher Education in Petrinja were involved in the earthquake at the end of December and offered help with both expert and equipment support.

Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of UP wrote the following letter in this regard:

Dear Colleagues, Dear current and former Students,

We were shocked to see the devastation caused to our neighbour by a series of earthquakes in the last days of December that claimed lives and destroyed hundreds of buildings, causing significant material damage.

Croatia is in a difficult situation and the University of Pécs is always trying to help those in need.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake on 29 December killed 7 people and injured dozens. The earthquake caused significant material damage to the cities of Petrinja and Sisak, the surrounding villages, and Zagreb. Many people were left without shelter.

Hundreds of people are being sheltered in military barracks, many of whom need social care and several families with small children are staying in the temporary shelter.

The Croatian Red Cross has also redirected teams from other counties to the earthquake-stricken area where, in addition to ongoing needs assessments, they are involved in caring for the injured, evacuating residents and cleaning up sites. Moreover, they take part in installing and operating shelters, providing psychosocial support to those involved, and performing nutrition and aid activities.

The leadership of the University of Pécs asks its teachers, employees, current and former students to help the victims of the earthquake.
