The aim of the project coordinated by the University of Pécs is to develop and produce research and innovation products that can reduce the disruption of fertility.

“In Hungary, infertility affects 15 percent of the couples today. The National Laboratory for Human Reproduction deals with the disorders and diseases of human reproduction. Among the biological and medical reasons in the background, we would like to understand those that have not been curable so far,” – said dr. L. Gábor Kovács, project leader and professor at the University of Pécs Szentágothai Research Center, to InfoRádio.

As he said, they are trying to approach the topic with new, innovative tools, to understand from the life of the embryo what is possible based on the sent biochemical signals. The study has also been extended to male infertility because the real cause of infertility is found in almost fifty percent of the cases in the father’s body.

One of the most unique plans of the research program is uterus transplantation, which has not been performed in Hungary before - the project leader emphasized. The details of this have yet to be worked out. According to the professor, this part of the program is a great challenge. They also want to introduce a test to determine at which hours the mother’s uterus is fertile. Several innovative manufacturers have also indicated their participation in the program.

Almost a hundred researchers, nine university institutes, three faculties and more than twenty innovative companies have joined the large-scale program of the National Laboratory for Human Reproduction so far.
