Motivational speech: the hotshot of true crime gives a lecture at the Medical School of Pécs

27 March 2023

Professor Michael Tsokos, forensic medical expert, medical director, and celebrated writer of the true crime genre, will deliver a lecture in the Aula of the UP Medical School on April 13. The event will be held within the framework of the "Motivational Speech" event organized by the English-German Student Council (EGSC) of the Medical School. The one-and-a-half-hour lecture in English is mainly aimed at future doctors and dentists, but the organizers welcome everyone who is interested.

Motivational Speech has nearly 10 years of history at the Medical School: it was first organized in 2014 by the English-German Student Council (EGSC) of the Medical School. Its aim is to help sensitize future doctors for an empathetic, inclusive society with the contribution of invited speakers.

In the past nine years, six well-known guests have delivered lectures at the Dr. György Romhányi Aula. Dr. Patch Adams, physician, comedian, and well-known social activist, who was impersonated on the screen by Robin Williams, addressed the medical and dental students of Pécs. Dr. Bennet Omalu, pathologist and forensic medical expert was also present, who was the first to report signs of CTE, the chronic traumatic encephalopathy afflicting American football players.

Medical students in Pécs had the opportunity to listen to Professor Robert Winston, the English father of artificial insemination, as well as Frank Warren, the founder of the PostSecret art and social movement. There was Walter Junior RJ Mitte, who became a celebrated actor and social activist despite having cerebral palsy, and in 2022, Angel Giuffria, who wore one of the most modern bionic forearms in the world and liked to call herself a cyborg, was born without a left forearm, but that did not’ stop her from building a career as a model, filmmaker and an enthusiastic advocate for people with disabilities in Hollywood.

On April 13, 2023, Professor Michael Tsokos, forensic medical expert, medical director and writer, will give a lecture in the Aula of the old building of the Medical School. Since 2007, Professor Tsokos has headed the Charité Institute of Forensic Medicine and the State Institute of Forensic and Social Medicine in Berlin-Moabit. As Medical Director of Charité's Anti-Violent Ambulatory Clinic and ambassador for the German Children's Association, Michael Tsokos regularly raises awareness of and takes action against child abuse.

As an author, he has published numerous non-fiction and thriller books, as well as crime fiction, occasionally in collaboration with other authors or experts. Several of his books became bestsellers in Germany. He started a podcast series called "Die Zeichen des Todes" ("The Signs of Death"), which is very popular. He is a prominent representative of the so-called true crime stories, with about half a million followers on Instagram. Since true crime stories are extremely popular among medical students these days, it was obvious that the English-German Student Council would invite him to the School's flagship event this year.

During his visit to Pécs, Professor Tsokos will meet the heads of the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Medical School, as well as the lecturers of the Department of Anatomy and Pathology. His lecture will be entitled "True Crime Night", which will be held in English and last about an hour and a half.
