Topic

The objective of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge about microorganisms, which is essential for understanding antimicrobial therapy, vaccination, sterilization and disinfection procedures. A key component of the curriculum is antibiotic therapy, covering the mechanisms of action, spectrum of activity, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics of the most significant antibiotic groups. The issue of antimicrobial resistance and its global health impacts are discussed in detail. Proficiency in sterilization and disinfection procedures, as well as the microbiological purity control of pharmaceutical products, is indispensable for pharmacy students, forming the basis of patient safety and a secure drug supply. Furthermore, students learn about the immunological background of infectious diseases and the fundamental principles of vaccinations and immunotherapy. The course also involves a part of systematic bacteriology, where therapeutic and preventive options for specific pathogens are discussed in details. By gaining comprehensive knowledge of antimicrobial agents and vaccines, pharmacy students will be equipped to provide reliable patient information and engage in pharmaceutical research. Ultimately, this prepares them for an active role in the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.

Conditions for acceptance of the semester

Students are encouraged to attend lectures, as they facilitate a better understanding of the curriculum.

Mid-term exams

Instructors may verify attendance during lectures through unannounced short quizzes. Attendance points earned during the semester will be added to the exam score in the exam-period as follows:

+3 points: 100% participation in the verified sessions and submission of answers.

+2 points: 85–99% participation in the verified sessions and submission of answers.

+1 point: 75–84% participation in the verified sessions and submission of answers.

Earned attendance points are also valid for retake exams within the same semester. In the event of a course retake in a subsequent academic year (exam-only course), these bonus points cannot be carried over.

Exam topics/questions

The written exam consists of 60 single choice questions with 4 possible answers. Final score consists of the exam score and the attendance points. The final score is graded according to a five-grade scale:
54-60 points (90-100%) - excellent (5);
48-53 points (80-89%) - good (4);
42-47 points (70-79%) - average (3);
36-41 points (60-69%) - pass (2);
0-35 points (0-59%) - fail (1).
