Topic
The course briefly describes the features of the human microbiota, microflora and pathogens and their interactions with the human body. It will discuss the medical/pharmaceutical role of microbial products and the impact of microbiology on the development of different industrial technologies such as pharmaceutical, medical diagnostic and food technologies. Lectures and practicals will provide an overview of the latest technologies, their theoretical background and their applicability in different industrial fields.
The practicals are aimed to familiarise the students with the basic techniques and methods of microbiology by carrying out tasks independently. Students will be familiarised with methods of sterilisation, disinfection and sanitisation, aseptic laboratory work, the use techniques of different microbiological cultures and different detection and identification methods of microbes. Genetic engineering methods used in the field of microbiology will also be introduced.
