Ultramodern Simulation Education Centre at the University of Pécs Medical School

20 November 2023

The University of Pécs Medical School’s former Simulation Education System has functioned on the fourth floor of the old main building, on 280 square metres since 2015. As the result of a project ending in November this year, the newly named Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre was expanded to six times its previous size, to 1700 square metres, now also housing the education area of the dentistry training. The gross value of the project is over 2 billion HUF, financed with the support of European Union funding. The new centre was handed over on November 20.

The main task of the centre is the development of manual and communication skills of gradual and post-gradual medical students, doctors and healthcare training participants, thereby supporting the clinical education programs. The demand for the activities of the Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre has grown each year; in 2022, there were 700 contact lessons with 9000 participants each semester, and this year, they have surpassed 4500 participants by October. This made the expansion of the centre necessary, including the modernisation of the equipment as well. The number of education rooms has also increased with the project, and the relevant parts of the buildings also underwent renovation.

A surgery practice room was implemented with educational or demonstrative purposes, where training surgeries can be conducted using real medical equipment. The practice room will play an important role in the relevant research/development and innovation projects. The teaching lab with virtual and augmented reality technologies (VR/AR) is also new, boasting the most modern imaging tools in healthcare and medical trainings. The rooms serving education in communication skills were furnished as real consultation or ward rooms, while rooms belonging to the operational medicine concepts make the education of prehospital care possible at a high level. Aside from all of this, the audio-visual system for supporting education was also further developed, allowing not only the recording and replaying of education material, but also aiding the creation of digital education material from the recordings.

The Dental Education Centre lies on 250 square metres within the new area. It is a brand new education area with 25 dental phantom lab stations, 10 surgery microscopes and a modern system supporting audio-visual education.

As a result of the developments, the interdisciplinary Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre of the Pécs Medical School and the dental skill subsection is not only a regionally unique department; it is also capable of providing education at a European and world quality.
