Medical students in Pécs had the opportunity to practice with a robotic surgeon

Robots enriched the operating theatre of the University of Pécs Medical School Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre for one week. In collaboration with the teaching team of Isle Academy (the first minimally invasive surgical simulation centre in Central and Eastern Europe), the University of Pécs installed two complete DaVinci robotic surgical systems and a simulation console to assist the training in the centre, thus integrating the basics of robotic surgical training into undergraduate surgical education as one of the first ones in Europe.

The students at the Medical School in Pécs had the opportunity to learn about and try the most modern surgical system of our time. The comprehensive program of the Isle Academy, which is also leading robotic surgical training programs in several European countries, provided an excellent opportunity for modern technology and student creativity to meet, giving the participants in the training an insight into the behind-the-scenes of robotic surgery.

"For the first time in Europe, we have allowed third-year students to try this unique surgical technology. We showed them the small steps that can be used to structure a surgery," Dr. Zalán Szántó, associate professor and head of division at the UP Clinical Centre Department of Surgery, told UnivTV.

Medical student Kristóf Krasznai said that trying the device is essential and very useful, which is a great experience because it is like operating on an actual patient.

"This is the first time our company has been asked to organise training for third-year students. Medical students need to learn about these technological developments that affect their future profession. We see this as a great opportunity to prepare the next generation of doctors for this, who will thus have marketable knowledge," said Angeliki Karava, Business Director of Isle Academy.

Dr. Zalán Szántó added that many students are adept at using the system, and he hopes they will consider dealing with surgery in more depth in the future.
