Topic

The course Fundamentals of Rehabilitation Medicine aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the possibilities and significance of rehabilitation care in clinical practice.

Rehabilitation is a function-oriented, structured activity focused on the restoration or, when necessary, substitution of lost functions. The course presents the rehabilitation process following acute care in patients with polytrauma, brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, and other post-traumatic conditions. It also introduces the principles and practice of comprehensive habilitation in children.

Special emphasis is placed on specific fields within rehabilitation medicine, including cardiological, pulmonological, psychiatric, and addiction rehabilitation. When full functional recovery is not achievable, rehabilitation focuses on strengthening residual abilities and applying compensatory strategies, thereby significantly improving patients’ independence and quality of life.

The course highlights the importance of multiprofessional teamwork, presenting the coordinated collaboration of rehabilitation physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists, rehabilitation nurses, art therapists, and social workers.

Our objective is twofold: first, to develop a rehabilitation-oriented approach applicable across all areas of medical practice; second, to help alleviate workforce challenges in rehabilitation care by demonstrating the importance and professional value of this medical field.
