The renovation of southern park of the Medical School is progressing according to plans with the relocation of public utilities and continuous earthwork. The park is expected to be completed next spring and become a modern community area for students and local residents.

As it is known, the Medical School’s park facing Szigeti street is undergoing serious changes: almost 11 thousand square metres are being renovated within the scope of a net 726 million Forints project, in three stages.

The handover of the area to the contractor happened in May 2024, and the visible part of work began in the middle of June with closing off the park and removing paving. The area facing Szigeti street was closed off for the renovation, the parking area is out of use. The fence facing the street will also be removed.

After a summer spent working, progress will not stop in September either. As we have learnt from Gábor Szabó, developmental head of the UP Medical School, demolition, earthwork and the relocation of public utilities is currently underway. A water reservoir is being built under the new parking area, which was preceded by the removal of the previous waste collection tanks. The reconstruction is progressing according to plans, handover of the completed area is expected early 2025.

Focusing on community functions

Head architect and city planner Ders Csaba has said about the southern park earlier that an elegant pedestrian walkway will be built on the area, and the road to the old main building of the Medical School will go through a wooded park. The parkin area in the middle of the southern park will be relocated to a less frequented area that is marginal in the life of the campus.

As the design plans show, there will be furniture placed in the park to promote personal and group relaxation, study and eating, and the area will be made more welcoming with green paving. The area will form a unified look with the new Dental Education Block, and there will be unique, symbolic sculptures and furniture added as well.
