Topic

During the course, special emphasis is placed on developing a clinicopathological approach, that is, on understanding the relationships among clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and the macroscopic and microscopic alterations observed in diseased tissues and organs. Accordingly, by the end of the academic year students are expected to demonstrate a clinicopathological mode of thinking and competence in differential diagnosis.

Within the framework of the course, students acquire fundamental knowledge of organ-based pathology and the pathological alterations affecting individual organ systems. As the curriculum is designed for dental students, particular emphasis is placed on oral pathology and diseases of the head and neck region.

The following subject areas are covered: pulmonary pathology, hematopathology, pathology of the gastrointestinal tract, pathology of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas, dermatopathology, cardiovascular pathology, oral and head and neck pathology, pathology of the endocrine organs, renal pathology, pathology of the male and female genital tracts, and breast pathology.

In the dental curriculum, pathology is taught in the second semester and consists of 28 lectures and 28 hours (14 sessions) of histopathology practical training, with a predominant focus on oral pathology.

Teaching of dental students during the second semester is organized by the Department of Oral Pathology within the Institute of Pathology.

A key requirement is that students — in accordance with the specific needs of their discipline — acquire knowledge of the principal pathological lesions occurring in the oral cavity and the head and neck region, including their pathogenesis and their macroscopic and, to an appropriate extent, microscopic characteristics. This knowledge will subsequently support their studies in specialized dental subjects and facilitate effective consultation with pathologists in clinical practice.

Conditions for acceptance of the semester

If a student's absences from histopathology seminars exceed 21%, the course will not be credited. The maximum number of permitted absences is three (2×45-minute) histopathology seminars.

Mid-term exams

Final exam for the dentist students includes two slides and 2 exam questions.
