In 2022, the University of Pécs participated for the seventh time in the “UI GreenMetric World University Rankings” international program and was ranked 21st among the 1050 “green universities” in the world. It was the third time that UP earned the best place among the 11 Hungarian universities in the ranking, earning the title of “Greenest Hungarian University” again this year.
It is important for UP to reduce the environmental pressures resulting from its activities and also the exposure and vulnerability of its infrastructure and activities to local environmental impacts while supporting UP’s collaborating partners in the implementation. Systems thinking, a complex sustainability approach, and cooperation with the partners provide an opportunity to address the challenges in a holistic way. This result demonstrates that the achievement of the 4–5-year sustainability goals set at the time of the model change has come nearer within a year and a half. UP has achieved to become the greenest university in Hungary, but it is also clear that it needs to remain open and receptive to new innovations that reduce its ecological footprint. Our institution is inspired by the spirit and philosophy of the competition, and these encourage all disciplines within UP’s education and research portfolio to address the issue, said Dr. Katalin Szili, a UP Board of Trustees member responsible for sustainability.
Through its Green University Program, the University of Pécs would like to further enhance its sustainability efforts, doing its utmost to promote environmentally conscious awareness-raising in all sectors and to spread sustainable solutions in the natural, social and economic environment in the South Transdanubia, as well as in the national and international scene. The transformation of environmental consciousness into action depends on many elements, but it basically means providing an alternative and an opportunity for the university's staff, teachers, and students to act with responsibility towards nature and the environment, creating the chance to live more environmentally friendly, added István Decsi, Chancellor of UP.
Thanks to its conscious and disciplined environmental ambitions and its efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals, UP has been able to advance in the ever-expanding international ranking year after year. The UP Green University Program is a catalyst for green innovations aimed at achieving the sustainable development goals. The continuous improvement of the University of Pécs is clearly visible in the system based on objective indicators. The University is committed to the green idea and plans its future developments accordingly - said Tünde Kulcsár, program coordinator of the UP Green University.
The world's “greenest” university in 2022 - retaining last year's first place – is the Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, followed by the Nottingham Trent University in the UK and the University of Nottingham in the UK.
