The University of Pécs reached an outstanding rank again in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings in 2024, as it finished 25th out of 1477 universities from 95 countries. The University of Pécs not only earned the title of Hungary's greenest university for the fifth time, but also strengthened its position among the international universities applying sustainability approach.
Dr. Katalin SZILI, Foundation Board Member responsible for sustainability at the University of Pécs: "The University has achieved significant results since the model changel. Besides innovation, one of the most important projects is the development of a systems approach in education, research and operation. Progress towards sustainability goals proves that the University is successfully implementing its deliberate strategy. Our goal is for all educational and research areas to integrate the sustainability approach, so as the development of the infrastructure of the University also contributes to reducing environmental burdens." She highlighted that the establishment of the UP Green University Program Office and the Sustainable Development Coordination Council will contribute to the implementation of sustainability efforts at the system level.
István DECSI, Chancellor of the University of Pécs, emphasized that universities not only carry out teaching and research activities, but also take an active part in awareness raising. The University of Pécs is also committed to setting an example for other organizations by applying sustainability approach. They also consider it important to leave a positive impact on the economic and social level with innovative research and development.
"Universities play a key role in shaping the attitudes of future generations and thereby contribute to a change in social attitudes towards sustainability. The establishment of the UP Green University Program Office in 2024, besides developing a conscious approach, will enable a deeper and broader transfer of knowledge and awareness prioritizing development aspects among citizens of the University." added Tünde KULCSÁR, Head of the Green University Program Office.
According to the list, the world's greenest university in 2024 – maintaining its first place from 2023 – was Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands), followed by Nottingham Trent University (UK) and the University of Groningen (Netherlands).
