Tematika
Alcohol consumption and alcohol related problems was firstly related and described in a play attributed to Eubulus, a Greek comic poet of the 4th century BC, where Dionysos speaks: "I mix three kylikes of wine only for those who are wise. One kylix (250 ml) is for good health, which they drink first. The second is for love and pleasure. The third is for sleep, and when they have drunk it those who are wise wander homewards. The fourth is no longer ours, but belongs to arrogance". The course is intended to familiarize students the historical background of wine consumption and pose a question whether one kylix is really good for health? Starting with intoxication by a toxicological viewpoint, lectures move toward discussing alcoholism and addiction in a psychiatric and somatic perspective, touching the possible wayouts and prevention. The course is also intended to familiarize students with the epidemiological phenomenon called French paradox, discussing the effects of polyphenols – particularly trans-resveratrol – in red wine on health. To critically evaluate wine consumption, only peer-reviewed litterature will be presented through lectures.
