The first robotic lung surgery in Hungary was performed in Pécs

16 December 2022

The University of Pécs Clinical Centre was the first in Hungary to have a robot perform thoracic surgery, namely the DaVinci Xi robot, which performed lung surgery on 13 December. Patients can expect less pain and faster recovery thanks to the revolutionary technique.

The robotic surgery team at the UP Clinical Centre has already performed several gynaecological, surgical, and urology procedures using the recently arrived DaVinci Xi Dual Console robot.

The essence of the robotic surgery technique is that the console surgeon performing the surgery does not stand directly next to the patient but controls the robot's arms from a so-called “booth”. The robot can be used for almost any type of thoracic surgery, but it is mainly used for oncological conditions,”

said Dr. Gábor Szalai, senior lecturer at the Department of Surgery.

As the head of the working group, Dr. András Papp said, this surgery will be followed by a full program, and an otorhinolaryngology program is also planned to be launched in the near future.
