The University of Pécs received new circulatory and respiratory support devices of outstanding importance in the treatment of coronavirus patients, with the approval of the Operational Staff and organized by the National Healthcare Service Center. The devices were shown to the press on 28 January at the Heart Institute.

Among the circulatory and respiratory support techniques, the so-called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is widely used in intensive care units. "vaECMO" is used by professionals to support the pump function of the heart, while "vvECMO" devices are suitable for respiratory support. The two new, ultra-modern equipment are suitable for both functions, with more than one hundred million HUF combined value.

Dr. Attila Miseta, the rector of UP, said in connection with the purchase: "The new ECMO devices will not only further improve the quality of medical and specialist training based on progressive patient care, but will also expand scientific and research opportunities."

Dr. Andor Sebestyén, president of the UP Clinical Center, emphasized: "The UP Clinical Center is a regional center for COVID intensive care, which is why the commissioning of the new ECMO devices is of great importance for the residents of the South Transdanubia region."

"During the COVID epidemic, many such treatments were used at the Coronavirus Care Center in the case of patients with severe pneumonia that could not be controlled with traditional ventilation techniques," added Dr. Attila Cziráki, head of the Heart Institute. He also stressed that timely ECMO treatment, even in the case of a very severe COVID infection, gives the patient a significant chance of survival. The new devices have doubled the clinic's ECMO capacity, so they can be used to treat patients with severe circulatory conditions at the Heart Institute and in the COVID intensive care unit.

Dr. Péter Hoppál and János Kővári thanked the healthcare workers for their heroic struggle against the pandemic.
