Tematika

Laboratory medicine plays a decisive role in differential diagnosis, therapeutic decision-making, and patient follow-up in the modern patient care. The Diagnostic Case Studies course aims to develop advanced clinical reasoning and diagnostic competencies in fourth- and fifth-year medical students. The subject provides a structured, case-based learning environment in which students actively apply diagnostics to solve real clinical cases. The course is designed to enable students to select appropriate diagnostic investigations, interpret results within their clinical context, and consider preanalytical and clinical aspects of laboratory testing. During the practices, students work collaboratively in groups to establish differential diagnoses, justify their test rest requests, interpret laboratory abnormalities, and determine the most probable diagnosis. The course concludes with a practial exam in which students apply the acquired competencies through the evaluation of clinical cases.

The case studies in this semester include the diagnostic approach to preanalytical errors, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, as well as hematological, cardiovascular, hepatological, and nephrological diseases.

The course concludes with a practical exam during which students demonstrate the application of acquired diagnostic reasoning and laboratory decision-making skills through the analysis and presentation of a clinical case study aligned with the semester’s curriculum.
