The best students of this year’s Brain Bee also won extra points for admission

16 April 2024

The Hungarian round of the International Brain Bee with a neuroscience theme was held for the third time: the April finals of the competition, organised by the UP Centre for Neuroscience and the Hungarian Neuroscience Society, were held in the theoretical building of the Medical School in Pécs. This year, podium results were also worth extra points for admission to the Hungarian programme.

The first round of the International Brain Bee in Hungary was held in Pécs in the spring of 2022, hosted by the UP Centre for Neuroscience. The competition was held again in 2023, and this year, for the third time in a row, the Hungarian round of the world competition in the field of neurosciences was announced.

As in previous years, the competition was divided into a written and an oral section; the written section was held on 21 March, and the finals on 6 April.

As we learned from Dr. Ágnes Kemény, associate professor at the UPMS Department of Medical Biology and the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, also the main organiser of the competition, 37 students from different secondary schools of the country applied for this year’s competition, 12 of them qualified for the oral finals in April, which took place in the Dean's Conference Room of the UP Medical School.

The winner of the competition was Benedek Csirmaz, a student at the Németh László Gimnázium in Budapest, coached by Áron Október Kovács. Benedek Csirmaz has thus qualified for this year’s International Brain Bee World Championship, which will be held online from 5-9 October as part of the Neuroscience 2024 conference satellite programme.

Boldizsár Bősze finished in second place, a student at the Radnóti Miklós Kísérleti Gimnázium in Szeged, coached by Zoltán Ádám Seres. Olivér Dinnyés finished in third place, a student at ELTE Bolyai János Gimnázium in Szombathely, coached by József Baranyai.

This year’s competition was also worth extra points for those applying to the Hungarian programme of the UPMS: the first, second, and third places were worth 15, 10, and 5 points, respectively.
