On Saturday, October 26th, 2024, we organized the first Pathophysiology ECG Workshop of the Institute of Translational Medicine. It took place in three classrooms of the MediSkillsLab. The Workshop aimed at deepening the theoretical and practical knowledge of ECG analysis of third-year medical students. It also provided opportunity to register ECG recordings of volunteers and participants, thus gaining hands-on experience on the practice and pitfalls of ECG recording.
Third-year medical students from all three language programs of the Medical School could register in groups of three. These teams (19 groups, 57 students) could compare their knowledge of ECG analysis in clinical and practice-oriented situations. The analysis of ECG curves took place at various stations. Two stations equipped with patient beds and ECG devices served the practice of the correct placement of ECG electrodes. Demonstrator students helped the participants and described the significance of rapid bedside diagnostics. Thus, students gained insight into the relationship between ECG and clinical practice.
The competition ended with a joint discussion of the curves, where the organizing team and the supervisors paid special attention to pointing out typical errors. After the competition, students participated in a joint analysis of challenging ECG curves associated with patient history, which broadened their perspective on special cases such as the ECG curves of pregnant mothers, of inherited disorders or misplaced electrodes, etc.
It was a great pleasure to work with smart, motivated and enthusiastic students. The positive student feedback describing the Workshop as fun, helpful, interesting and educational, particularly reinforced our motivation for planning similar future workshops. Many responses indicated that our Workshop was both well-organized and enjoyable. Students also stated that they would welcome and gladly participate in similar programs in the future.
The MediSkillsLab greatly contributed to the success of the workshop. This modern and outstanding unit of the Faculty provided both comfortable and professional settings for the clinical situations. The main organizers of the workshop were Dr. Erika Pétervári, Jessica Seetge and Dr. Márta Balaskó. Other teachers such as Dr. Tamás Ollmann, Dr. Gréta Pham-Dobor, Dr. Franciska Baksa, Dr. Fanni Pólai, Dr. Csaba Varga, Dr. Izabella Török, Réka Meszéna, Benedek Kasza also contributed greatly to the success of the event. The hard-working, talented and enthusiastic demonstrators of the Institute, Júlia Müller, Albert András Fekete, Zétény Csonka, Vince Fülöp, Stefánia Hollókövi, Mohammad Ihsan Zafar Giffry Hussain, János Kocsa, Gréta Kovács, Márton Révész and Boróka Varga donated their time, energy and knowledge generously. They were essential to the success of this Workshop and it will be fun to work with them in the future!
