The renovation of the Southern Park of the University of Pécs Medical School is progressing smoothly and is expected to be completed in the latter half of spring 2025. The project is significant not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its functional benefits, creating new opportunities for students, faculty, and residents. The aim is to establish a modern community space worthy of the university's prestige and history.
Construction began nearly a year ago and covers an area of approximately 11,000 square meters. Pécs TV provided detailed coverage of the project on March 18, featuring interviews with Dr Miklós Nyitrai, Dean of the UP Medical School, and Dr Ders Csaba, university head architect. This development will not only enhance the park aesthetically but also create an inspiring, practical environment for students and staff.
"The environment in which we welcome our students and colleagues is crucial. Our goal is to ensure that everyone who comes here to study or work feels proud and happy about their surroundings. We aim to achieve this by continually following national and international best practices, looking for ways to enhance our infrastructure alongside improving educational content," said Dr Miklós Nyitrai.
"The UPMS is deliberately opening up its public spaces to the city. We're aligning the park with the surrounding urban areas by creating comfortable, spacious pedestrian walkways," said Dr Ders Csaba, head architect. He also noted that pedestrian areas would be shaded by rows of Japanese cherry trees, making the new park an ideal spot for relaxation, studying, or communal gatherings.
The development will feature timeless stone paving and attractive green areas designed to offer high-quality recreational spaces. Unique elements, such as a parapet wall with the PTE-ÁOK insciption and a rain shelter pavilion will also be included. The project, funded by faculty resources totaling HUF 927 million, is anticipated to conclude in the second half of spring.
