Pécs Medical School team wins bronze at leading international EMS competition

9 June 2026

Students from the University of Pécs Medical School secured third place at the Rallye Rejvíz 2026 international emergency medicine and rescue competition, held in the Czech Republic between 27 and 31 May. Competing in the MUC (Medicinae Universae Candidatus) category for medical students, the team became the first Hungarian medical student team to compete internationally in this division.

Rallye Rejvíz is widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious international competitions in emergency medical services, bringing together professionals involved in emergency care and rescue operations for nearly three decades. According to the official event website, the competition scenarios are designed to recreate realistic emergency situations while testing participants’ clinical knowledge, decision-making skills and teamwork under pressure.

Established in 1997 in Jeseník, Czech Republic, the competition is now in its 29th edition and has grown into one of the leading international events in prehospital emergency care, originally launched during a conference marking the 20th anniversary of the local EMS organization.

Alongside several Hungarian teams, students from the University of Pécs Medical School competed in the MUC.RR (Medicinae Universae Candidatus) category, which is open to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-year medical students. Fourteen teams took part in the category, with the Pécs team earning a place on the podium by finishing third. A total of 137 teams participated across all categories in the international competition, according to the official event website.

Team members Anetta Tóth, Eszter Bodrogvári and Levente Blakney said they were particularly proud to be the first Hungarian medical student team to compete in this category. Throughout the competition, they were required to manage complex emergency and prehospital care scenarios that demanded a high level of professional competence, rapid decision-making and effective teamwork.

During the event, participants received emergency dispatches through an application developed specifically for the competition and travelled to various locations in the surrounding area. Simulated scenarios included double resuscitation cases, treatment of septic patients, management of poisoning incidents, examination of abused children, telephone-based emergency dispatch, and mass casualty incidents.

In addition to the University of Pécs Medical School students, several other Hungarian teams also achieved excellent results. A team from the Hungarian Rapid Response Police finished third in its category, while teams from the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, the Hungarian Air Ambulance Nonprofit Ltd., and the University of Pécs Faculty of Health Sciences also achieved strong results.

Beyond the professional challenge, the competition also provided valuable opportunities for international networking. Over the five-day event, participants established new professional connections and friendships. As is tradition, the competition concluded with a spectacular ambulance convoy parade, during which nearly 70 emergency vehicles travelled through the surrounding towns and villages.
