Making its debut this year, “The Anatomist Art Guild” is introducing itself with an exhibition compiled from the artworks of more than a hundred students of the Medical School in Pécs. Opening on 15 October at 5:00 pm in the main hall (Aula) of the new building at the University of Pécs Medical School, the exhibition will feature posters, paintings, and graphic works in a variety of styles.
“The posters, paintings, and graphic works were created during a course available in three languages, entitled ‘How to create anatomical illustrations’. Teachers, artists and student demonstrators assist undergraduate and PhD students in producing these artworks. A few years ago, we tested which techniques might be most suitable for them together with painter and DLA student Karina Horgas, to replicate the old educational anatomical posters, and that is how the idea for the course was born,” said László Ákos Kovács MD. PhD, assistant professor at the Department of Anatomy of the University of Pécs Medical School and main organiser of the exhibition.
As he explained, when creating the illustrations, students are free to choose the subject they wish to visualize. During anatomical art class, they learn the basics of art history and painting, while in drawing anatomy course they depict a set subject using graphite and charcoal pencils. There is also a PhD course that focuses on the application, practice, and use of visual and graphic art elements, which students can also adapt into digital illustrations.
“For some, creating art is a way to relax, while others experience it as a challenge. Our aim is to provide students with a space and the opportunity to create their works, and to introduce them to ever-new techniques year after year,” added Dr László Ákos Kovács.
The exhibition can be visited until 30 October.
