The Heart Institute is 20 years old

28 November 2019

This year, the Clinical Centre’s Heart Institute celebrates its 20th anniversary; as a regional centre for cardiology and cardiac surgery, the Institute is continuously providing medical care for cardiac patients in the South Transdanubia region with over 220 staff members, 24 hours a day. The Institute provides medical care for an average of 7,500 inpatients each year, and 47,000 examinations are conducted annually at the cardiology specialist ambulance.

Acute coronary syndrome, heart attacks and death rates have declined significantly in the region since the opening of the Heart Institute in 1999. The available combined hybrid heart catheter device is capable of performing all currently available interventions on coronary arteries, ultrasound tracking of manipulations in the coronary artery, and opening of chronically occluded coronary arteries. In addition, complex cardiac and major vascular surgeries, diagnostic examination of peripheral arteries and implantation of vascular prostheses are possible. An increasing number of artificial heart valve implants are carried out via the main artery, utilizing the potential of the hybrid operating room.

The clinic has the 3-dimensional echocardiography and the cardiac MRI, and the CT scans can be carried out at the nearby Department of Radiology. These state-of-the-art imaging tests are also of great help in the accurate detection and effective treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The implantation of all types of pacemakers, including state-of-the-art resynchronization, defibrillator and wireless pacemakers are performed here. It is also possible to treat patients with coronary heart disease and heart failure with a circulatory support device, and to prepare them for heart transplantation. Over the past 20 years, the cardiac surgery team has performed thousands of coronary artery bypass surgeries, cardiac valve surgeries (artificial valve implantations, biological valve implantations, valve surgeries) and combined open heart surgeries. Today, an increasing number of minimally invasive and non-thoracic endoscopic heart surgeries represent innovation and progress.
