22 June 2021

A delegation from the Nigerian National Defence College arrived in Hungary for a one-week study trip, organized by the Ministry of Innovation and Technology together with the Nigerian Embassy in Budapest. As part of this, the African delegation arrived at the University of Pécs on 21 June.

István Tarrósy, Director of the UP International Centre said in connection with the visit: “Our university has extensive, active institutional relations in Africa, which is also reflected in the growing number of young people studying here from the African continent. The African Research Centre has been operating at the University of Pécs since 2009, its activities are very multidimensional - the delegation’s visit to our university is also due to these facts.”

Appointed Ambassador of Nigeria, Her Excellency Dr. Irele Modupe Enitan visited Pécs for the first time since her appointment in May and expressed her pleasure that students from African countries can gain positive experience and integrate easily. The visit to Pécs was also facilitated by the wide research portfolio of UP and the presence of Magnus Aircraft, the latter company is also working on African collaborations.

The main goal of the study trip is to acquaint the members of the delegation with Hungarian digital technologies and solutions, as well as with national development ideas. On behalf of UP, the delegation was welcomed by József Betlehem, Vice Rector for General Affairs, Connections and Strategic Affairs, and István Tarrósy, Director of the International Centre. Several of the more than ninety Nigerian students of UP were present at the meeting, sharing their experience in a few words. They say they really like studying here because the city is beautiful and student friendly. The programme in Pécs included a visit to the main sights of the Baranya county seat, as well as a factory visit at Magnus Aircraft Zrt.

István Tarrósy emphasized: “The visit can bring further new, mainly research, research and development relations to Pécs and it further strengthens the Pécs-Africa relations regarding one of our new partner institutions in Nigeria as well. This is Lagos State University, with which we are launching teacher and student exchanges in the framework of Erasmus+ international credit mobility.”
