SPECIALIST IN MIGRATION HEALTH
Addressing new challenges in Europe
The aim of the Specialist in Migration Health postgraduate training course is to provide further education possibility on a field of rapidly growing importance that currently is still missing from the national and international educational sphere. We will train professionals empowering them with a multidisciplinary knowledge and skills around the health/ public health aspects of migration. The course covers a number of fields like direct health assistance, healthcare/ health care system planning at a ‘migrant sensitive’ way, health policy, adapted sociology and economics/ health economics and the importance of intercultural competences.
The knowledge and competences obtained during the training are sufficient to fulfil and solve the special healthcare needs of migrant individuals and communities (foreign workers, asylum seekers, victims of trafficking in human beings, ethnic minorities, etc.) The training course aims to contribute to the smooth and successful integration of migrants and other populations who have landed on a social periphery.
The course has gained already the full support of WHO European Office.

Admission requirements
- Medical and health sciences: healthcare and disease prevention undergraduate degree with a specialization in public health inspection, healthcare management undergraduate degree, and medical doctor, dentist, pharmaceutical degrees. Nursing and patient care undergraduate degree, healthcare and disease prevention undergraduate degree with a specialization in postnatal district nursing,
- Social sciences: sociology, social studies, communication and media studies undergraduate degree, social training branch: social work and social pedagogy undergraduate degree, political science training branch political science and international studies undergraduate degrees,
- Economics sciences: business economics and management, human resources and international business economics undergraduate degrees and economics training branch public service undergraduate degree,
- Public administration, law enforcement and military training sciences: law enforcement administration undergraduate degree with a specialization in migration, disaster management or border policing, international administration and public administration management undergraduate degree, law degree
- Undergraduate degrees of teacher training, arts and humanities and natural sciences.
- Sport sciences: recreation management and health improvement undergraduate degree.
The curriculum
The postgraduate training course responds to the need for special additional knowledge, skills and competencies around the following three complex subject groups:

Fundamental knowledge in epidemiology, bio statistics and demography, public health medicine, health policy and economics, leadership skills, health ethics and law, health sociology and psychology.

Fundamental knowledge in research methodology, planning, organizing and managing healthcare systems, project management, community health and health promotion, intercultural competence, communication skills.

Practical application of knowledge and skills: healthcare and sociocultural needs of migrant communities, migrant-sensitive healthcare system, occupational health aspects of migrant workforce, ethnic specific therapy, geographical epidemiology/ morbidity profile (both communicable and non-communicable diseases) of sending and host countries, health/ public health impact of mass migration.
Internship
A compulsory professional internship and research work is connected to the training program that should be completed in the fourth semester. The professional internship is strongly attached to the thesis work of the participants, its duration is minimum 6 weeks, its localities should be professional institutes, migrant reception centers, NGOs that deal with the healthcare of migrants and national healthcare institutes.
