6th DDK Workshop for Internal Medicine

29 November 2021

On November 13, 2021, with the participation of 75 students and 25 demonstrator students, the DDK-Workshop for Internal Medicine was held for the sixth time. The main goal of the event was to provide as many students as possible the opportunity to practice the physical examination. The one-day event was available not only to third-year students but also to fourth year students, because many of them did not have the opportunity to practise the physical examination due to the online lessons last semesters.

The MediSkillsLab was unable to host the Demonstrator Workshop this time due to recent reconstruction work, so a new venue had to be found for the event after five years: finally, the ground floor “red” wing of the new building could be occupied by students on this day. The study and teaching took place on Saturday morning from 9 am to 6 pm, in 3-hour shifts, in 4 rooms, in 3 languages, in small groups.

The shifts began with a short half-hour theoretical-presentation review, followed by a physical examination exercise by regions. The lecturers of the presentations and the instructors of the physical examination were clinical demonstration students. Clinical demonstrators are senior demonstrator students whose selection and training in all three languages is organized by the II. Clinic for Internal Medicine and Nephrological, Diabetological Center. The training ends with an exam, and those who pass can participate in the clinical instructor work as clinical demonstrators.

During the workshop, 75 third- and fourth-year (31 Hungarian, 24 German and 20 English) students had the opportunity to develop their practical skills. During the event, the organizers paid special attention to compliance with epidemiological restrictions.

Based on the feedback from the participating students, the workshop was again a success: students in all three programs consider the practice provided by clinical demonstrators to be indispensable. Many highlighted the benefits of small group learning and the opportunity to practice freely, the high level of preparedness and helpfulness of the demonstrators. In their opinion, there is a great need for similar workshops in the future.

The organizers of the 6th DDK Workshop for Internal Medicine were Aida Kerbeche, demonstrator for the Hungarian students, Patrick Nimmler, demonstrator for the German students and Vincent Thomsen, demonstrator for the English students.

The help of the 25 demonstrator students was essential for the success of the workshop.
