UP has again earned the title of “Bicycle-Friendly Workplace”

20 March 2025

The University of Pécs has been awarded the “Bicycle-Friendly Workplace” for the fourth time. The “Bicycle-Friendly City” and “Bicycle-Friendly Workplace” awards were presented on 19 March at the Hungarian Institute for Transport Sciences and Logistics Ltd. in Budapest.

In 2006, the Ministry of Economy and Transport launched the “Bicycle-Friendly City” and “Bicycle-Friendly Workplace” applications, which were launched in 2024 for the 16th time for cities, small, medium, and multinational companies and public institutions. The aim of the awards is to recognise workplaces that make an outstanding contribution to promoting and supporting environmentally friendly forms of transport. The University of Pécs is committed to providing safe and comfortable cycling conditions for its employees and students.

26 municipalities and 33 workplaces applied in 2024, of which 11 cities and 12 companies and institutions were awarded the title. The winners can use the Bicycle-Friendly title and logo for one year.

A key part of UP’s efforts is to raise awareness of zero-emission transport in the frame of environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on cycling. Bicycles provided free of charge for employees in the frame of the “Cycle to work to the university!” project, the game launched for cyclists, the bicycle breakfasts organised in the frame of the European Mobility Week, the lectures on the topic, the bicycle storage facilities available on the campuses constantly being expanded, and the organised bike tours are all proof that the University of Pécs considers the popularisation and spread of two-wheeled transport as its mission.

“We are honoured to have been awarded the title of “Bicycle-Friendly Workplace” again. Sustainability is of paramount importance to the university, and we are pleased that our actions to support cycling can contribute to protecting our environment and preserving the health of our citizens. The recognition is another step in UP's commitment to sustainable development and strengthens our cooperation with our community to build an even greener and more liveable future”, said Tünde Kulcsár, Head of the UP Green University Programme Office.
