The Dr. György Romhányi Aula and the aula of the new educational and theoretical building was also filled with students and visitors on 3 December, who came to the joint Open Day of the University of Pécs Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy in order to get familiar with the study programmes and the opportunities offered by the Faculties, the professional work of the departments, the student mentors and the representatives of the student organisations. I interviewed some high school students about their experiences and impressions.

It was almost impossible to step outside the entrance at 9 a.m. as nearly 1,600 visitors waited to join the Open Day of the University of Pécs Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy. After entering, visitors dispersed among the stands looking for the one that suited them the most according to their interests. Many of them gathered in groups with their parents or friends. A student from Kaposvár said that she had not receive any kind of help from the high school she attended regarding further education, which is why she visited the event and also to find out about the possible options. She is mainly interested in general medicine, because she would like to become a doctor at the intensive care unit. She also heard positive things about Pécs, including that it is good to be a student here.
„I am from Kalocsa, and I definitely would like to get a job in the medical field, but Budapest is too big and noisy for me. I also visited the Open Day of the University of Szeged Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School, but I did not feel comfortable there, and Debrecen is so far for me, so Pécs remained. I already attended the Open Day in Pécs when I was in ninth grade, and I really liked the University. I came today again, because I am interested in everything, as I would like to become an oxylogist, an emergency specialist. It seems nice that everything was explained in detail, all of my questions were answered, the university is prepared and well-equipped” – said the student in 11th grade.
Another student, who is also interested in General Medicine, visited the Open Day also on purpose. The student first met the medical students of the University of Pécs Medical School at the Educatio Education Exhibition last year, who were really kind and direct toward the student. „Their openness won me over, and then they explained how good it is to study in Pécs” – said another young person, who added that he had visited the stands and experienced interesting things. „I think it is a great opportunity that the Faculty supports health maintenance. A great community is also important, so that we do not study alone. I am currently a student in Budapest, but I find the education a bit impersonal there, I am more attracted to the environment which is more family-like.”
A couple of friends are already counted to be regular visitors, as this was not the first Open Day they attended. „We fell in love with Pécs. We were given a presentation held by lecturers from Pécs at our orientation day, so it caught our attention and that was when we decided to visit the Medical School in Pécs, so we have been coming every year since. We both really like it.” Although their first priority is to become doctors, they are also open to have a career in pharmacy, because they think there is also the possibility of healing in that field, and it also requires knowledge in biology.”
The best place for a future dentist is the dental stand, so I was talking to a student near to it who had visited the Open Day, because a family friend advised to do so. The student had also heard a lot of positive things from the girl studying dentistry in Pécs. „Pécs is closer to me, I have heard better things about this Faculty than about other ones. I also like the atmosphere here, and I visited the Open Day to see what the physical environment is like. I am definitely going to attend the dental lecture.”
The student came from Győr, whose friend is studying at the Medical School in Pécs, but she does not think that this might be her way. She would like to become a pharmacist or biotechnologist, as she is not interested in autopsy, but she likes chemistry, perhaps even more than biology. However, technology caught her attention in Biotechnology, as she also enjoys IT and mathematics. „I enjoyed that I could participate in interactive tasks, we also had the chance to get to know more about Pécs, and I could try new things” – the young girl expressed her enthusiasm.
