7 July 2020

"He who follows the spirit of Ignác Semmelweis and László Boldog Batthyány-Strattmann, creates value and preserves value" - said dr. Miklós Kásler at the ceremony of the Semmelweis Day awards on 6 July, in Pesti Vigadó.

In his greeting, the Minister of Human Capacities said that Ignác Semmelweis carried on the most beautiful traditions of thousands of years of medicine, considered life to be the most important thing and risked his health, his life in order to save lives. The Minister recalled that Ignác Semmelweis was the one who accurately recognized the nature of childbed fever, the cause of the disease, described the route of infection, observed the symptoms, the complaints. With his discovery, he saved millions of women and children, so posterity rightly calls him the saviour of mothers, the greatest physician, the benefactor of mankind.

Dr. Miklós Kásler said about László Batthyány-Strattmann that the ophthalmologist understood the suffering of others as a deeply believing man, he had the desire to help and solidarity and as a rich aristocrat he healed those in need free of charge.

Speaking to the awardees, he emphasized that those who receive these awards strive to follow the spirit of the two great predecessors.

In recognition of her outstanding achievements in the field of healthcare and in patient care and scientific research, the Minister of Human Capacities awarded the Batthyány-Strattmann László Prize to dr. Hajna Losonczy, Professor Emeritus at the University of Pécs Clinical Center 1st Department of Internal Medicine.
