The Medical School’s Preclinical Research Center was handed over on 11 January, a unique and niche facility in the region. Its establishment was supported by the European Union with more than HUF 1.2 billion.
Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University of Pécs, said at the ceremony that the research carried out at the Preclinical Research Center could bring us closer to understanding the development of diseases through a better understanding of physiological and pathophysiological phenomena and also creates opportunities for testing new therapeutic methods. They hope that this state-of-the-art research unit will also foster collaboration with other partners at home and abroad.
"The development of the quality infrastructure requirements and conditions necessary for the teaching and research activities of the Medical School in Pécs has been our ambition for almost two decades", emphasized Dr. Miklós Nyitrai, Dean of the Medical School. As he said, during the implementation of the project, four departments with separate entrances and ventilation systems were established. The operating theatre of the new center is essential for postgraduate medical training, it is a state-of-the-art unit equipped with operating tables, which will also allow the development of surgical techniques and materials used for operations. There is also a department for research into infectious diseases, which has become increasingly important due to the pandemic.
As mentioned, in addition to brain research, which has a long tradition in Pécs, the new center will also house research into several other disease models, including a special cold room for studying thermoregulation processes.
The new center is located next to the theoretical building of the Medical School, with a total floor area of just over 1260 square meters.
